“Repointing” is the process of removing old damaged mortar from the joints and replacing it with fresh new mortar.

“Tuckpointing” is a process of removing the old mortar from the joints and replacing it with mortar that exactly matches the color of the wall. Narrow rows of mortar ("fillets") in a contrasting color are then placed in the center of the new mortar joint. The terms "tuckpointing" and "repointing" are often used interchangeably; however, the final products are quite different aesthetically. Both of these processes involve removing damaged and old mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar. However, the repointing process does not include the additional step of placing contrast mortar lines at the joints. Some homeowners prefer tuckpointing because it creates a sharp visual illusion. If you do not look closely at the wall, you will not notice where the mortar ends and the brick begins. The fillets trick the eye into thinking that the straight lines are joints. Thus, the whole wall looks like it was built with masonry.
