When a structure or wall is built of stone, bond stones are placed within the wall to hold the structure together. A bond stone is often called a “tie stone” or a “through stone.” These stones extend across the entire width of the wall- from the inside of the wall to the outside. Stone walls are generally built in two layers with bond stones running through those layers, which holds them together preventing them from cracking or splitting in the middle. The spaces in between are usually filled with crushed stone with the connecting stones evenly spread across the entire surface of the wall, which makes the whole wall a solid object. Bond stones are critical in stone masonry.

Rubble masonry uses rough, unhammered, stones. The thickness of the joints in this type of masonry is often irregular, making the stonework appear rugged and rough. Rubble masonry can generally be divided into three categories: dry rubble masonry, squared rubble masonry, and random rubble masonry. Random stone masonry is the cheapest and roughest type of masonry, and uses stones that are not uniform. These different sized stones and shapes form the structure and the gaps are filled with mortar. Squared stone masonry uses stones that are pounded into a square shape, which creates fairly uniform stones. Finally, dry rubble masonry uses a variety of stones, which fit together and eliminate the need for mortar. For this type of masonry, the wall height should not exceed six meters.

Another type of masonry is Ashlars masonry, which is more expensive and uses fine-shaped stones. Unlike rubble masonry, all stones, joint thickness, and other aspects are uniform, which creates a wall that looks good and remains strong. The joints of Ashlars masonry are tightly sealed with lime mortar or concrete. Ashlars masonry is often used in architectural buildings, pillars, bridges, and other massive structures.

What does a stone mason do? Stonemasons use stones, brick, cement, concrete blocks, and natural and artificial stone to build bridges, sidewalks, walls, fences, and other structures out of the stone-like materials. Oftentimes, masons specialize in one material - for example brick masons or stone masons. Stonemasons build stone structures like walls, arches, piers, and create stone walkways or fashion tanks, vats, and floors. The possibilities are endless.

A mason's primary tools are simple: a hammer and chisel, which they use to shape the stones and join them together to create masterful and ornate structures. Stonemasons generally start with a stone block that has been cut from a larger solid natural stone. Masons take this rough stone and shape it into precise shapes to be used in forming solid structures, monuments, or sculptures. The work of a skilled mason can last for centuries. For example, just look at the ancient buildings and aqueducts of Rome, or the castles of Europe.
